FEAR OF LOOSING CONTROL & LACK OF TRUST

Updated: Sep 5, 2020

"Have you ever heard of the term, "The King's Dilemma"?"

Coined by professor Samuel Huntington of Harvard University in 1968, it zooms in on a perplexing problem that all monarchs face:

"How can I liberalize my kingdom without ceding my own personal control & power?"

With the rise of remote work, it is important for companies to adjust their traditional policies, but many leaders fear losing the control that they've always held.

Kings want to maintain power, but it is difficult for a nation to foster things like entrepreneurship and innovation if the citizens do not have some degree of #political and economic freedom.

Micro-Management

While this conundrum definitely affects rulers of nations, it also affects 'rulers' of companies as well.

In the business and startup world, we have all heard stories of (or even personally experienced) horrible bosses who like to micro-manage and control their employees.

Oftentimes, this fear of losing control and lack of trust from the higher-ups seeds animosity amongst the employees, in the same way that a sense of rebellion would brew in an actual repressive kingdom.

And in the end, no one wins.

Furthermore, In the wake of covid19 and the rise of remote work, it is important for companies to adjust their traditional policies, but many leaders fear losing the control that they've always held.

How would you advise them to solve 'The King's Dilemma' as we embark into this new age?
